XLPE hook-up is a single core wire manufactured under the UL 758 Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) standard. Several types exist with different voltage and temperature ratings. XLPE is an abbreviation for cross-linked polyethylene and refers to a process where the molecular structure of polyethylene changes as a result of including additives such as silane or peroxide or using high-energy electron or microwave radiation. This process changes polyethylene from a thermoplastic material that softens with heat to a thermoset material that does not soften or shrink when heated. It's also much tougher.

XLPE insulated cable is a chemical or physical method that transforms the cable-insulating polyethylene molecules from a linear molecular structure into a main network structure.That is, the thermoplastic polyethylene is converted into a thermosetting cross-linked polyethylene, thereby greatly improving it.
