What are the Different Applications of 1×7 and 1×19 Industrial Steel Strands?

When it comes to industrial hardware, most pieces and parts serve specific purposes. Slings are designed for overhead lifting, chains for securement, nuts and bolts hold things together. But industrial steel strands are surprisingly a very versatile piece of hardware that can be used in many industries.

Now first it is important to define what industrial strands are – and most notably their distinction from wire ropes. These hardware terms are commonly confused and mistakenly used interchangeably.

Industrial steel strands are typically smaller in diameter than wire ropes. Additionally, an industrial strand is made of a core wire with several more wires wrapped around it. This creates a singular strand. Wire ropes are constructed with several strands woven together to form an entire rope. This makes it much more flexible than an industrial strand.

Finally, the greatest distinction of steel strands is their applications. Wire rope is designed for overhead lifting applications, tie-downs, and securement thanks to its flexible yet strong design. Industrial cable, on the other hand, has several different uses.

Let’s dive in.

 Differences Between 1×7 and 1×19

There are two main sizes of industrial steel strands sold by industrial strand suppliers: 1×7 and 1×19. These numbers refer to the number of wires used to construct the strand.
1×7 industrial strand has a singular center core wire with 6 strands wrapped around the core. This style has the greatest stretch resistance and high strength but offers very low flexibility. 1×7 industrial strands are characterized for being extremely stiff, making them ideal for added tension.
A 1×19 industrial strand has a single central core wire with 18 additional wires wrapped around it. This is constructed in two layers: 6 wires around the center core, and 12 exterior wires. This provides a bit more flexibility, but decreases stretch and resists compression. It is commonly used for push-pull or pull-pull controls.

Both sizes may be made in either galvanized finish or stainless steel. Hot-dipped galvanization is typically used for strands to ensure that each wire is evenly coated. Both wires are typically designed in a left regular lay, meaning the wires are twisted clockwise.

 Fencing and Support

Industrial steel strands are extremely strong and will not snap, bend, or break even under heavy pressure. For this reason, they are widely used for support and fencing purposes on all types of structures. Stainless steel industrial strand fences are commonly seen on commercial buildings, agricultural structures, and even for some home designs.

Since 1×19 industrial strands are a bit flexible, they can be used to create steel fencing. Strands are wrapped around central support rails to create sturdy railings and fencing. Stainless steel is the ideal fencing material since it is typically exposed to the elements. This material will not rust or corrode in the rain, snow, or high humidity.

Singular industrial strands can also be used to hold structures in place or provide support. For instance, they can be used to tie down tents, for zip-lines, garage doors, or even in exercise equipment. Industrial steel strands are also common for marine applications since they are strong enough to secure boats to the dock. Both 1×7 and 1×19 strands can be used for these purposes, depending on the level of strength, stretch, or flexibility required.

 Electrical Purposes

The steel materials used to create industrial strands conducts electricity extremely well, so these are often used in underground electrical lines. The robust steel wires are rated for high-voltage transmissions while reducing energy loss. Furthermore, they are durable and can withstand wear and tear, as well as the impact of volatile weather.

Again, either 1×7 or 1×19 industrial strand may be used in this instance, depending on the intended purpose. Generally, a 1×7 may be more common, as this will result in a stiffer wire that is easier to thread through underground openings.

Some industrial strands are also used for electric train transportation. These resilient strands serve two purposes: support and transmission. The industrial strands create strong, durable cables that electrical trains run along. The steel material also transmits electricity quite efficiently, powering high-speed trains along the track.

 Buildings and Bridges

Perhaps the most common application of industrial steel strands is for construction purposes. Longer sturdy strands are used to supports tons of weight in both bridges and multi-story buildings.

Steel strands are used along with concrete, steel beams, and reinforced bars to stabilize multi-story structures. Industrial strands are used within the flooring and ceilings to provide additional support and secure beams together.

These strands are also designed to provide extra stability in earthquakes. This is because steel helps to diffuse vibrations, so the movement from the earthquake travels along the strands. This helps to stabilize the building, preventing structures from collapsing.

Steel strands are also widely used in suspension bridges, which rely on wires to connect the bridge’s deck to the support beams. Both 1×7 and 1×19 industrial cables are used in bridges for different purposes. These wires help to evenly distribute weight across the entire bridge, providing added stability and reducing sway.

Conclusion

Industrial steel strands are an essential piece of hardware that can be used in all types of ways. However, the most important factor to these strands is quality. Lower quality materials will compromise the strand’s strength and durability. This can result in dangerous consequences.
